What is an llms.txt file and do I actually need one?
An llms.txt file is a plain-text file placed at the root of your website, similar to robots.txt. It gives AI language models structured context about your business: what you do, who you serve, what services you offer, and which pages matter most. Google's May 2026 AI optimization guide says llms.txt is not required for Google AI Overviews. But ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Claude tooling can read it, so we treat it as cross-LLM insurance: cheap to add, helpful where it's read, never the thing that gets you into Google AI search by itself.
